Theremin repair and modification shop
Either in my home or "on tour", thereminists may benefit from my experience, knowledge and my fully equipped toolbox which comprises among others an oscilloscope, a frequency counter, a multimeter and some special RF alignment tools. My mobile workshop saw already a great success on several international theremin festivals. Recently I've even been designated as technical consultant for a private vacuum tube theremin collection in Paris/France.
I'm not only working on factory built theremins but am also experienced in building and troubleshooting most of the actual theremin kits. So don't hesitate to contact me using the contact form for any theremin-related question!
Although I do not offer this as a commercial service I'll ask for a modest contribution to cover my costs and to allow me pursuing my theremin related research and development. (See list below)
some current theremin models I'm familiar with
Moog:
+ Etherwave Standard, Etherwave Pro, Series 91 (A, B, C), EM-Theremin
Burns:
+ B3, B3 Deluxe
Paia:
+ Theremax (including its unofficial clone, the PT-03 suitcase theremin)
Silicon Chip/EPE:
+ All variants since 1996
Kees Enkelaar:
+ The Kees Enkelaar Theremin V1 and V2
Gakken:
+ Premium Theremin
service, diagnose, tuning
As I've already worked on most current theremins, my experience allows me to see and feel rapidly (assisted by my frequency counter) if a specific instrument matches still the initial specifications concerning range, linearity and response or if and what kind of intervention will be needed. So it may be that I must only tell you how to adjust properly the pitch and volume tuning knobs and how to optimize your playing position in order to get out the maximum of your theremin.
Many theremin problems can be healed by properly tuning/adjusting the internal oscillators and filter/detector stages. Tuning-related problems happen because some built-in frequency determining components are aging. During the systematic tuning of all stages of a theremin I'll also see if there is a more serious problem with one or more of the components.
repair
As soon as a problem with an electronic circuit is diagnosed, it may also be repaired. But it is impossible for me to carry all potential spare parts with me. That's why I ask you to contact me in such cases before we meet, so that I might already get an idea of the problem and be prepared.
modification
Some theremins are lacking functionality, others have problems by design. One prominent example is the sloppy volume response of the Moog Etherwave Pro Theremin for which I developed the EPVM1345 module. An other example is the Moog Etherwave Standard which may get an increased pitch range by one or even one and a half octave and a more rich timbre by tuning its pitch oscillators in a very special way. This works best on newest production runs where linearization coils with less parasitic capacitance have been used.
Other modifications which I can bring to your theremin are the installation of the Plus kit field upgrade on your Moog Etherwave Standard (not possible "on tour" since the cabinet has to be modified), the "skew" modification which gives the Theremax and the Silicon Chip theremins a more interesting timbre and more stability at lower frequencies or the addition of external pitch and volume tuning knobs onto the simple Silicon Chip theremin variants.
Some of the Burns B3 theremins come with an attached 110V power supply. I may build in a plug instead which allows the connection of a suiting European power supply or a battery adapter designed by me especially for these models.
pricing
As told above I do not offer all this as a commercial service. But I should at least cover my costs. That's why I ask you to pay for eventual spare parts and shipping costs and a modest contribution. The following list has only recommendatory character. Your contribution may vary depending on your satisfaction:
+ Complete check-up of your theremin and eventual instructions without opening it: 10€
+ Tuning your theremin until it matches the specifications or detection of a serious problem: 20€
+ Installation of the "skew" modification on a Theremax or a Silicon Chip Theremin: 20€
+ Special tuning of your Etherwave Standard in order to modify its pitch range: 30€
+ Power supply modification of your B3 theremin including a matching power supply: 30€
+ Installation of a EPVM1345 module into your Etherwave Pro (including the module): 60€
All other interventions may be discussed following the needed working time and spare parts.
